Are Certain Job Industries Contributing to Today's Gender Inequality?

Hey class, this blog will focus on the inequity issues particularly around gender (Specifically, the representations of males and females on equality)

Are Certain Job Industries Contributing to Today's Gender Inequality?

Before you continue reading my blog please watch this video (8.8+ MIL Views) from 0:58 to 3:20, (link) Side note, my blog is not on feminism (the focus of the video) but rather to take information from this video with a few examples of inequality between men and women.

Let’s start things off with defining what equality truly is – equality, the state of being equal, in status, rights, and opportunities. – today there still are inequality issues particularly around gender.

Surprisingly, in Canada the female wage gap exists statistically, but only by comparing male to female without taking into consideration multiple situations that they are put in. The president and CEO of the Canadian Women’s Foundation states that, “nearly half of all Canadians believe the wage gap is one of the biggest roadblocks to equality,” (Paulette Senior). Now this is very misleading by only looking at one to one ratio for male to female. You have to account for the several variables which can clearly demonstrate why. Women may have less time to work, a prime example being a stay at home mother, which can change soon. Evidently, several women may not be seeking a job where they achieve leadership roles such as CEO etc.

At the same time, job opportunities were proven to be different 60 years ago where men would traditionally be the breadwinners for the family. To this day women are revoked of a job opportunity because they might not be up to the task, or may have future pregnancies impacting their work performance while requiring time off. In aviation jobs there are jobs for both men and women. Pilots a higher paying job which are predominantly dominated by men, whereas flight attendants which are lesser paying jobs have a more abundant number in women. Incidentally, there are still several jobs in 2017 that are predominately dominated by a single sex. To illustrate, dentists (the doctor) are usually seen as men whereas dental hygienists are mostly female. How can this change or will it impact the future of Canada?

Notably, ‘rape culture’ falls under the gender inequality. If a man or women were to be accused of rape they are brought to court and it is taken seriously on both ends. Here’s where it gets interesting a prime example includes if a man is accused of rape he will get 10 years or more in prison similar to what the presenter said in the video, and women would only get 2 to 3 years max. Clearly, the rights are not being treated equally nor is it repetitive of the fact that it is publicized more often than not for men.

Given these points, Canada is taking steps to achieve this goal starting with Justin Trudeau as the Canadian prime minister. Trudeau, in 2015 has introduced multiple new opportunities for the country to put more women in political positions as a start. As a whole Canadian society, we should continue aspiring to achieve more equal balance between genders. Improvements can begin with more women graduation from higher learning institutions. Adding to the Canadian Human Rights Section possibly making Gender section. Having them translate into decision-making role positions. Not only concealed to with jobs, but rather coming to par with men and living a society where opportunities, rights, and status is equal.

What do you guys have to comment on this topic?
Lastly, How can the domination of a single sex in one line of work change? How will/can it impact the future of Canada? Where would transgenders slot into this argument?

You can answer my Straw Poll (link) to voice your opinion on the inequity issues particularly around gender. [error: on 9th question, correction "No - You do NOT Believe that Gender Inequality is being Misrepresented."]

  1. I think that gender equality is a major issue that people want to make better by actually making genders equal but never actually do anything to do about it. If one person is more likely to get a job over another just becuase of gender then depending on the job it is fine for example construction could actually want a male over a female because most males are naturally built for heavy labor. It Can impact Canada's future by showing the world Canada is about equality and that it gives everyone a chance.

    1. Hey Nabil, you stated that people do want equality in genders but never follow through. How would you think people should go along with attempting to equalize gender in the workplace? I do not agree with your statement of "that one person is more likely to get a job over someone else regarding their gender", even if it is a fact that men are built with more muscle mass, that should not dictate who gets the job or not. The fact of the matter is that the same woman that applied for a construction job may work better, you can not judge simply by gender. Lastly, by finding how we should go about equalizing gender in the workplace it can set a precedent! For Canada and the rest of the world.

  2. Hey Abdul, in my opinion there is definitely inequality in genders and even in work. However, i do not believe in the wage gap with in the same job. A female pilot and a male pilot with the same experience will get paid the same, obviously depending on other factors but none gender related. Now on to your question on jobs that are dominated by single sex is mostly driven by gender stereotypes. Some examples pertaining to work on an airline would be males are not able to serve delicately to be the flight attendants. Women are not good "drivers" which to some be translated to bad pilots. Looking past the stereotypes in most job situations i do not believe that there is valid reasons for the domination of a single sex. Finally, i do not believe that this will impact the future of Canada as women are just as capable as men and can do the same jobs with the same efficiency.

    1. Safwaan I agree with you on the fact that a female pilot and a male pilot with the same experience will generally get paid the same, but here is where the gender gap may actually exist. On average how many female pilots do you see compared to male ones, most of the time you will see a male. On the other hand the same thing goes for flight attendants on average you would see more dominated by females. The wage gap may not specifically be in the same exact job rather which jobs females retain! Given my examples in the blog of pilots making more than attendants, etc. That is my theory on the wage gap, but even that is flawed because it does not work for all job industries nor does it take into account the interest, availability, or dedication to a certain job. Do you really believe that a possible wage gap may not impact the future of Canada?

  3. Hey Abdul, I agree with you on how some jobs are more dominated by one gender. But I believe that the reason for that is the interests of different genders. For example, construction is mostly dominated by men, but if women wanted to, they could work in construction too, but they decide not to simply because its not their forte. Since construction has a lot of heavy lifting and a lot of messy work, women usually don't like doing those types of things. Some woman do, and those woman could become construction women if they wanted to, nothing is stopping them. But women usually like working in more elegant areas, such as flight attendants, and nurses. It's simply the woman's choice. No one is really stopping them from working in the male dominated workplaces except for themselves. That also goes for men, if men want to work as flight attendants they can, no one is stopping them. But its just the point of view of men wanting to work with tougher things, and stuff that is less elegant.
