Gender Stereotypes in Children

Hello fellow bloggers, We are all aware of gender stereotypes between men and women but are we aware how early these stereotypes are pushed upon children. The following experiment conducted by BBC shows how at some level adults push these stereotypes on children even if subconsciously. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWu44AqF0iI They dress toddlers in clothes typically worn by the opposite sex and ask adult volunteers to play with them. All of the adults chose toys to give to the toddlers purely based on the clothes they were wearing, the children dressed as boys were mainly given a toy robot by the adults and the girls were given a doll or teddy bear. As a species we subconsciously fear being different to some extent. This is evidently seen in how we treat our children. we give little girls dolls and unicorns while the boys get trucks and robots. We shape the minds of kids who in turn will shape the minds of the future generations. This has been the unending cycle of human e...

Women in the Media

Image
Hello Class, Can everyone please watch this video before continuing on with the rest of the blog.  https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=NswJ4kO9uHc&t=2s The media is nearly inescapable, we use it on a daily basis. The use of social media has an impact on our lives leading us to believe how females should be "represented" in the media. The media plays a role of shaping society into believing in gender roles. There has been an ongoing issue based on the representation of women in the media, why you may wonder? It has been proven that women in the media are constantly portrayed to be less powerful in comparison to men. Women are often sexualized and are always expected to be what society claim to be "perfect". There are many examples of this in the video. There were many big accomplishments, and good things that woman had gotten done in 2013. But the media still mainly concentrated on sexualizing women. Whether  it was for an Ad, or a game, women...

Gender EQUALITY

Image
H ello my fellow " bright-eyed" bloggers,           To start off we need to know what Gender equality even is.  Gender equality means when a state where no opportunities or resources are held back from people based on their gender. Gender equality is what should've been the bases of humanities future, rather than gender stereotypes.           Boys don't cry. Girls are delicate. Men are stronger. Women are too emotional. These are many of the gender-based stereotypes that prevent humanity to reach the equality between genders. These stereotypes have later lead to women being accepted into fewer jobs because of attributes that don't necessarily apply to them. These stereotypes are like small matches that can easily cause wildfires.            The society has changed over the course of the last few years with feminists trying to debunk some of these gender stereotypes. ...

Are Gender Norms Ever Going To Change?

Hello All, In society, people are now more open to equality about what males and females are naturally seen to do. Stereotypes: an image of what genders allowed to do that is held by society. Stereotypes are what society makes normal but nowadays stereotypes are often broken because of the new generation and how people think if anyone does an act that's not normal for a guy or girl it is deemed weird. The traditional roles and responsibilities of each gender are no longer what they use to be. In the past men and women had a completely different set of responsibilities. For example in the early 20th century men were expected to provide for the family financially. They were expected to go out and work and make a salary.  Whereas the women in the family were responsible for the household duties such as cooking and cleaning and taking care of the children. The wives or mothers were expected to do the laundry, prepare the meals for the famil...

Is Hip Hop anti-Gay?

Image
Is Hip Hop anti-Gay? by: Safwaan Islam Hip Hop and especially rap has been made to be all about the male fantasy. Having money power and women etc. Rap is also known to be about masculinity and anti-gay. This can be seen in earlier rap of the 2000s and before with the usage of statements like "No Homo". This a Statement used to explicitly state not being Gay  used by rappers like Cam, Lil Wayne and so many others. However, i believe that is no longer the case and rap over time has became accepting of homo and bi-sexual artists. It may seem that being gay in the hip hop industry would not be successful but it has shown to have made no difference. There are many rappers in the the Hip Hop Industry today that have come out at gay e.g ILOVEMAKONNEN, Frank Ocean and maybe even Tyler the Creator. Tyler the Creator (Left), Frank Ocean (Right) The rappers i have listed above have either came out gay or teetered with the idea of it. They also have not seemed to ...

Media -the weapon of both democracy and theocracy against homosexuality

Democracy is a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system. In other words, democracy is a government by the people, for the people and of the people. Since homosexuals are considered humans they are therefore also the people of the government. Countries which claim to be ruled by democracy while prohibiting gay marriage are the biggest hypocrites and are simply making a mockery of democracy. They are abusing and neglecting basic civil rights to the people who elected them to lead their country. A truly democratic government should have no say in the sexual orientation of its citizens. The most powerful instrument these hypocritical governments are using is the media. The media has been using propaganda against homosexuality to help make it look like it's a catastrophe to society since the 1950’s. A very recent example of how a country running under democracy is u...

Stop Stereotyping Gay Men

Image
Hello Classmates  We have all stereotyped a group of people at one point in our lives. One stereotype that still goes on in our society is that all gay people are not masculine but are more feminine. I believe that these stereotypes come from the media. Nowadays the media plays a big part in our society. Gay men on television usually appear to be someone's GBF (gay best friend). Therefore they shop, dress girly, and wear makeup. This has become a challenge for the gay guys who are more masculine and love to play sports. Media is something that young people could easily be influenced by. Individuals who struggle already with their identity look for role models who are like them so they could provide them with the inspiration to be successful and overcome adversity. However, if we do not start making a difference in the media, people’s ideology about gay men would remain the same; generation after generation would keep having these assumptions, therefore all men would have to li...

The Tv’s Viewer’s Guide To Diversity

Image
The TV’s Viewer’s Guide To Diversity December, 27,2017 Whether it was the “Golden age” of the 1950’s,the “Groovy-chic” 1970’s or the “Grunge and hip hop” influences of the 1990’s, all of these generations had one thing in common: television. Before the internet, television was used as a tool to introduce pop cultural influences to the masses as it sat in almost every household of the country. The growing need for representation was often portrayed through the addition of diverse cast members on popular tv shows like Fresh Prince of Bel Air.While the idea of traditional family structures was challenged since the 1980’s, it wasn’t until 1998 where audiences were introduced to their first gay character in the main cast of “Will and Grace”. A community often mocked and overlooked now had a character to represent them. The next 19 years saw this trend grow as homosexual characters were now the norm on various tv shows like Modern Family and Degrassi. However, the 2010’s saw an ...

Do Commercials Promote Gender Stereotypes?

Image
Do Commercials Promote Gender Stereotypes? By Yanish Ramrecha Hello classmates,                                 Men are expected to be masculine, strong and confident whereas women are expected to be beautiful, graceful and nurturing. These are some examples of gender stereotypes which are often shown in commercials.   Media has an influence over our views on males and females, whether it is through movies, advertisements or music videos. As the world has become more technologically based, we are constantly surrounded by media, namely in the form of advertisements. The messages that media outlets relay can have an impact on our perception as they can integrate stereotypical opinions into our judgement without our slightest remark. In this blog, I will be talking about how commercials can influence our views on...

Stigmas and Double Standards Associated With Homosexuality

Stigmas and Double Standards Associated With Homosexuality Hello fellow bloggers,               So we've all seen and discussed the topic of double standards between males and females, but have we ever specifically looked at homosexuality within that topic?               The question proposed is why is there a double standard and stigma between male and female homosexuality?             Let's begin with talking about heterosexual males and females. If straight males are touching each other, without being rough, it is often called gay. Now, when straight females are touching each other, this is seen as a normal activity. So, why is this the case? Is this due to male stereotypes and expectations of being the tough alpha male, or are there other reasons?              Here's another comparison. What do you picture a gay male to be like? Would th...

Reversing The Roles

Image
Hello everyone, First off, What are gender roles?  Gender roles are: the role or behavior learned by a person as  appropriate to their gender, determined by the prevailing cultural norms. Now if everyone can please watch this video before continuing on with this post ( What Dating Would Be Like If Men And Women Switch Their Roles ) Have you ever seen a woman proposing to a man? How about the lady paying for the date? Or How about a girl giving her man flowers?  The media and society have made these scenarios sound very weird and odd. Ultimately, the reason for this is gender roles and how much of an impact they have on peoples lives. Many people think that they must follow their gender roles, because if they don't, then they will be considered weird or odd. While watching the video "What Dating Would be Like if Men and Women Switched Their Roles", did you find any of the scenarios weird/odd, and why? One of the biggest reasons for gender roles being in play, i...

Should gender-neutral parenting be encouraged?

Image
Greetings everyone, Before I start, what is Gender-neutral parenting? GNP (Gender-neutrality parenting) is the idea that parents should not specify a gender onto their child, rather give their child full control over their gender. This means exposing them to genders far beyond male and female. Years before 2017, choosing genders was not a big issue and children were more than happy to receive their birth gender, but now it has become a big issue. Parents have become more open minded and are letting their kids decide what they are.   Since young children have no real-world views and cannot critically think, do you think that they should get to decide their own gender? Do you think parents should keep their child’s true gender identity a secret and let them decide? On the other hand, should parents force their sons to play with more masculine toys or daughters with more feminine toys. Do you think it is a right thing for them to tell their children what colours ...

Gender in the Military, Should It Matter?

Image
Gender in the Military, Should It Matter? Author: Asfand Yar Hello everybody... Imagine this… oil is found in the North Pole, Russia takes aggression and starts a full out war with Canada. The Canadian army starts to conscript men into the Canadian armed forces, as it is desperate for manpower on the front line. The question by this point is should women also be available for conscription in the Canadian armed forces. Watch this video before you continue reading…   The View: Should Women be Drafted   In the video, the female members of the talk show, have a conversation of whether women should be conscripted (same thing as drafted, in Canada we say conscripted) into the army. Being conscripted into the army, is when one is forced to serve in the armed forces. If a person were to be conscripted into the army, they would have to pass a physical test. The last time Canada had to draft people into the Canadian armed forces was in World War 2. Probably the ...

Stereotypes of Homosexuality Portrayed in The Media

What are stereotypes? What does it  mean when we stereotype people? Stereotypes hold an idea about a specific group of people look or act like. Stereotypes are usually found in the media and affects the how we perceive individuals that come from a specific group.  How many stereotypes can you think of homosexuality? Are they good or bad? Homosexual men are commonly portrayed as ''feminine'', whereas the women are portrayed as ''masculine'' on television/movies.  Gay men have been stereotyped to have good fashion sense and into wearing makeup.  Lesbians on the other hand, are portrayed by a woman with short hair and are commonly viewed as  ''butch'' women or dress like men. Here's a video that discusses the stereotypes of Homosexuality portrayed in television and I would like to know your thoughts  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbdxRZJfRp4 What do you think about  how the media portrays homosexuals? Is it fair that they ...

Gender Inequality

Image
* Merry Xmas from Ademola Male vs female        Gender inequality is a well known recurring issue in the society. Let's agree that there has been more male jobs than there is for the females. Engineering being the most dominated profession by male gender, while about 11% of females are practically engineers. Now to consider if the world is being fair or not using the following criteria: Considering the biology of the human body, males are more physically and mentally conditioned for labor jobs; they have higher grip strength than females. Women in general are more gentle, passionate and delicate than men. I'm not a sexist but imagine a world where hospitals are dominated by men, no one will want to go there for treatment, or a world where crane and heavy vehicle operation is dominated by women. Production won't be fast and efficient.   Here's an video and article discussing the dangers of women doing heavy lifting and shift...

Where we should draw a line

Image
Same-sex marriages have been recorded from the 1st century BCE, this was the start of homosexual marriages. This was not accepted back then and still not accepted until this day, but many things back then are not accepted today. Back in the old days, they would test ones innocents in many ways trials, not normal trials they are referred to as trial by ordeal. They would have a trial by fire, where if you live you're innocent and if you die you lied and are guilty and also punished. This is one place where we have changed, we use words and evidence to find out if someone is innocent. Then why can't we advance and change in other places too?       Around the world, homosexuality is frowned upon. This can be seen all around us, from words or action that disclude or discriminate against homosexuals. The world has not fully accepted homosexuals, but what actions they take do not justify hatred for them. There are many parts of the world that have ...

Image
