Media -the weapon of both democracy and theocracy against homosexuality

Democracy is a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system. In other words, democracy is a government by the people, for the people and of the people. Since homosexuals are considered humans they are therefore also the people of the government. Countries which claim to be ruled by democracy while prohibiting gay marriage are the biggest hypocrites and are simply making a mockery of democracy. They are abusing and neglecting basic civil rights to the people who elected them to lead their country. A truly democratic government should have no say in the sexual orientation of its citizens.

The most powerful instrument these hypocritical governments are using is the media. The media has been using propaganda against homosexuality to help make it look like it's a catastrophe to society since the 1950’s. A very recent example of how a country running under democracy is using media against homosexuality is the Mitt Romney ad. Before you continue reading any further watch the ad (Mitt Romney ad).  Mitt Romney ran for the presidency of the United States of America in 2012, a country that not only classifies itself as democratic but also claims to be the leader of the free world. Did Mitt Romney go too far with this ad? How is a person discriminating a portion of the citizens of a country of democracy still be able to run for the presidency? Is the government to be blamed for allowing the ad to run? Was the government supposed to take action against this intolerant? If so how?

A theocracy is a form of government in which God or a deity is recognized as the supreme civil ruler. In this type of government, the religion (word of God or a deity) is before everything. These types of governments also use the media against everything that comes against their religion. Before you continue reading please watch (Jehovah's Witnesses). The video was made by a theocratic group called Jehovah’s witness. Did the group make their message clear in the video? Was the video effective?  Did the group go too far in the video? Should theocratic groups use this type of approach to persuade people against what they believe is wrong?

Finally, what are your views on using media against homosexuality? Are theocratic governments more reasonable to use media against homosexuality than democratic ones? Or should neither one of them use it as a weapon? Do you agree that true democrats should not care about the sexual orientation of their citizens? If you agree do you think Romney should have been eliminated as a nominee?

  1. I think that media is the most well known reason why homosexuality is known and people are accepting it. Many people have a liking to the same sex, but they think this is just them going crazy they are confused. Later on through media they learn that there is something called homosexuality, through media they find out that being straight is not the only thing they can be. Media has also been the reason why people have accepted people for being homosexual, media is where famous individuals promote homosexuality.

    1. Ahsan, although your statement is true to an extent the media, on the other hand, is the worst enemy to homosexuals. The media is like a knife with two points while one point defends homosexuality the other destroys it. There might be a few famous people promoting homosexuality but there are far more famous people criminalizing it like Mitt Romney. Media tells Homosexuals there are many more people like you and that being straight isn't the only path you can take but on the other side, it's telling them homosexuality should be diminished.

  2. Hi Osman, nice article. US politics is a complicated thing that has a lot of aspects to it. Religion plays a big part in how the country runs, even though in their constitution, it says religion and state should be separated. The Republicans, one of America's two major parties, still has very Christian believes in a part of their policies. In the last election over half of Americans voted for republicans. Mitt Romney is a very devoted Christian Republican who believes that gay marriage is a sin. That sort of ad in Canada would get a lot of backlash, but in the US, where gay marriage is still a dispute because of religious pressure within the government, the ad would not be seen so bad. Although Romney should be eliminated for the ad, he simply wasn't because their are a large amount of people in the US who agree with the Republican policy. Although their was a side which hated the ad and wanted Romney eliminated, their was still another maybe even bigger side that wanted him to stay, that is why he could not be eliminated from the race.
