Gender Inequality

Merry Xmas
from Ademola
Gender inequality is a well known recurring issue in the society. Let's agree that there has been more male jobs than there is for the females. Engineering being the most dominated profession by male gender, while about 11% of females are practically engineers. Now to consider if the world is being fair or not using the following criteria: Considering the biology of the human body, males are more physically and mentally conditioned for labor jobs; they have higher grip strength than females.
Women in general are more gentle, passionate and delicate than men. I'm not a sexist but imagine a world where hospitals are dominated by men, no one will want to go there for treatment, or a world where crane and heavy vehicle operation is dominated by women. Production won't be fast and efficient.
Here's an video and article discussing the dangers of women doing heavy lifting and shift work:
http://www.cnn.com/2017/02/07/health/infertility-manual-labor-shift-work-egg-count-study/index.html
My questions for you:
- What are your views on gender equality.
- Do you think we should listen to our never-ending-conscience that the world has been unfair and let more women than men into heavy engineering fields or should we leave things the way they are.

Hey Ademola
ReplyDeleteLets start by saying that this blog would offend a lot of females, I do agree that mans and females both have different advantages and disadvantage. I disagree where if women are doing construction it would be less faster and efficient. The world has changed we don't need strength to get most jobs done like in the days before us, we live in a age where our mind is replacing muscle. This means that even a monkey can do these jobs that require muscle, if he or she knows how to operate heavy machinery.

Deletei am kinda sorry but that article only discussed that heavy lifting is bad for female fertility(says it in the first line), the video was "5 myths about getting pregnant"(again fertility for females). This does not prove that females are less efficient and effective at construction, it only proved that females can do construction but at a risk.

DeleteI agree with Ahsan. I believe that in the modern age we live in, it does not depend on how strong you are physically, but how strong you are mentally. Scientists have built machinery that now give us the muscle power we need. Anyone smart enough can operate it, so your point on physical fitness between men and females is irrelevant. Secondly, I do believe that the world needs to move on from looking at a person’s physical structure to a person’s mentality.

DeleteAdemola, although you made a point and used satisfying proof, I disagree with you. Being physically able to do a job is absolutely not the same as being able to mentally do the job. All your statistics are showing is that men tend to be more muscular (physically stronger) than females. I agree with both Ahsan and Muhammed that due to all the equipment that we have in modern days that physical capabilities are neglectable. All that truly matters when taking into consideration the production's speed and efficiency is how much knowledge and experience the operator has with the machinery they are operating. Men, in my opinion, are as able to run a hospital as woman are. Which means men can treat patients just as good as females can. Therefore I honestly believe that your point is not only wrong but extremely offending to both females and males.

DeleteI feel that nowaday males and females in construction wouldn't matter becuase most of the jobs are done my machinery which doesn't require you to do as much physical labor but more mental thinking because knowledge is the key to do things at this point in time and forward

DeleteHello Ademola, interesting article. I disagree with you on what you said " males are more physically and mentally conditioned for labor jobs", maybe the part about physical conditioning is true, but definitely not mental. Their is no proof men work better mentally them women. Girls, from what I have personally observed in High School, concentrate and work better in school, but that's just my observation.
ReplyDeleteTo talk about the question about gender equality. I think Canada has made a big advancement in gender equality, our Prime Minister is a proud feminist, we are ranked 4th in world for best countries for women, and I said in my blog, Trudeau appointed a half women, half men cabinet. Then again this is just Canada, more work needs to be done around the world. In places like Afghanistan, girls don't even get educated. In China, parents get mad when they give birth to a girl because of their one child policy. So their is still a lot of work to be done and I think Canada needs to aid poorer nations, in helping to create a more equal society for both men and women. This is as simple as sending money for schools and sending convoys of people to help start schools for girls in poor nations.
I tried my best to go through the article without being mad at the amount of gender stereotypes that I came across, I feel like everyone else who commented on this have said the things I wanted to say and I agree with all of them but id just like to add that, the gender stereotypes you've mentioned have been debunked ages ago and we can't bring them back especially in a day and age where any human can do anything they desire.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Saying "I'm not a sexist" doesn't make the points you've made in the article any less sexist.
My views on gender equality is that, it can be achieved and we can struggle to get there, but if we still put labels on men and women of “weak,” “strong,” or “delicate” it would be impossible to reach that point. If humanity comes together to see that not every man is strong and not ever woman is delicate we can go one step further towards the equality that humanity has been craving.
DeleteI don’t think think we should leave the things as they are because it’s wrong, who said men can’t be doctors because people won’t go for treatment to them? Who said a woman can’t do construction work when more than half of the construction work just involves machinery. Men can give treatment and it is the same as when women do it, women can do construction work and it is the same as when men do, we need to learn that and grow out of the childish blue-pink mindset that we all have happily accepted. Also you’ve used the word “dominated” a lot in this blog, we should know by now that not a lot of things nowadays are “dominated” but someone/something. Hence, gender inequality does exist, in a lot of places of life, especially this blog.
haha! thanks for the response
DeleteWe should leave things the way they are. I think this because it great to see that more women are going into heavy engineering fields. This is showing that it doesn't matter what gender, as long as you do the job you applied for
ReplyDeleteNice article Ademola. I personally do not agree with the second part of your statement "Considering the biology of the human body, males are more physically and mentally conditioned for labor jobs" A Male individual may be physically stronger but woman are definitely more mentally capable. Research shows that six out of ten woman earn a bachelors degree compared to a males four out of ten. A scenario could arise where a single mom has three children and her only option is to work a labor job. If the employer denies her request simply due to her gender she has no way of providing for her children. With that being said i agree that jobs should be open for everyone, regardless of the gender.
