Stereotypes of Homosexuality Portrayed in The Media
What are stereotypes? What does it mean when we stereotype people? Stereotypes hold an idea about a specific group of people look or act like.
Stereotypes are usually found in the media and affects the how we perceive individuals that come from a specific group. How many stereotypes can you think of homosexuality? Are they good or bad?
Homosexual men are commonly portrayed as ''feminine'', whereas the women are portrayed as ''masculine'' on television/movies. Gay men have been stereotyped to have good fashion sense and into wearing makeup. Lesbians on the other hand, are portrayed by a woman with short hair and are commonly viewed as ''butch'' women or dress like men.

I feel that most media portrays homosexuals in a 1 dimensional way meaning if you're a homosexual male you will always look a certain way ,talk a certain way and your personality will be a certain way same goes for females. It is not fair because you're judging a gay person by a false view so if they don't act the way you think they should they aren't gay. Yes the media does affect how we view people from specific groups becuase from a young age we are exposed to stereotypical media which are developing Brains take in as facts and then when we are older we see it as that way. Well we can try to not take it as seriously and at a young age stay away from stereotypical media so we aren't affected by it.

ReplyDeleteMedia stereotypes homosexuals and it is not fair to those people who are trying to figure out themselves because media is placing this ideology that all gay men are feminine and women who are lesbian are masculine. We should understand that media will always be media and that we don’t have any control over it but what we do have control over is how we take it do we let the media influence us or do we ignore and meet people and then have assumptions how can one believe something on the media when they haven’t even witnessed it first-hand.
I think that the media portrays homosexuals through stereotypes like lesbians are masculine and that gays are feminine. I think it is not fair for homosexuals to be stereotyped like how it's not fair for any other group of people to be stereotyped. I believe the media has a huge effect on how people view specific groups since most people are consuming the media. I think that in order to not let these stereotypes do not affect or views on homosexuals we must take them for who they are.
