The TV’s Viewer’s Guide To Diversity

Whether it was the “Golden age” of the 1950’s,the “Groovy-chic” 1970’s or the “Grunge and hip hop” influences of the 1990’s, all of these generations had one thing in common: television. Before the internet, television was used as a tool to introduce pop cultural influences to the masses as it sat in almost every household of the country. The growing need for representation was often portrayed through the addition of diverse cast members on popular tv shows like Fresh Prince of Bel Air.While the idea of traditional family structures was challenged since the 1980’s, it wasn’t until 1998 where audiences were introduced to their first gay character in the main cast of “Will and Grace”. A community often mocked and overlooked now had a character to represent them. The next 19 years saw this trend grow as homosexual characters were now the norm on various tv shows like Modern Family and Degrassi. However, the 2010’s saw an increase in the representation of other individuals who identified under the LGBTQ (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) spectrum. This meant that the growing acceptance of gender identity also required new characters to portray these groups. We see this in Orange is the New Black (OITNB) where the character Sophia Burset is played by Laverne Cox, one of the first openly transgender woman on television. With the growing diversity and inclusion in the media, we see that television has come a long way with an increase in members of the LGBTQ community in some of our favorite shows. - “What are your thoughts on the portrayal of members from the LGBTQ community in mainstream media (television)?”
Sorry the photos were not working for me
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts on the portrayal of members of the LGBTQ community in mainstream media is that it really doesn't affect me in any way so them being in television shows is that media as started to become more with the LGBTQ. I expect there to be more People from the LGBTQ be in tv shows and eventually more in the movie scene.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Nabil in that seeing more LGBTQ members in the media doesn't bother me and i can see that in the next 10-15 years the number of members will only increase.
DeleteI feel like television has improved over the years showing diversity but I still feel like the LGBTQ community is not represented when it comes to romance movies. For example when I search up romance movies what I see is heterosexual’s couples and not enough homosexual couples. The media made a small step over the years when it comes to diversity but however in the future they need to step up and show more diversity or else improvement wont me made in the future.
ReplyDeleteI think that despite the portrayal of LGBTQ community in the media has gotten more realistic and less generalized, but it still stands on the bases of stereotypes, for example now tv shows have characters with more depth but still branching from the roots of stereotypes. I feel like in the future the portrayal of the LGBTQ community in tv shows would be seem-less and would be the same as any other heterosexual character
