Women in the Media
Hello Class,
Can everyone please watch this video before continuing on with the rest of the blog. https://www.youtube. com/watch?v=NswJ4kO9uHc&t=2s
The media is nearly inescapable, we use it on a daily basis. The use of social media has an impact on our lives leading us to believe how females should be "represented" in the media. The media plays a role of shaping society into believing in gender roles. There has been an ongoing issue based on the representation of women in the media, why you may wonder? It has been proven that women in the media are constantly portrayed to be less powerful in comparison to men. Women are often sexualized and are always expected to be what society claim to be "perfect". There are many examples of this in the video.
There were many big accomplishments, and good things that woman had gotten done in 2013. But the media still mainly concentrated on sexualizing women. Whether it was for an Ad, or a game, women were being sexualized and shown half naked so it can hook people and get people's attention. The part where a lady was being photo shopped to look really good is an example of how the media expects all women to be perfect and look good at all times. How is a woman supposed to be confident with herself when the media is showing all these photo shopped woman that look so perfect. It causes real women, that aren't being photo shopped, feel insecure and scared. What do you think, does the media in any way make women of the real world feel insecure about how they look, and how perfect they should look? Are companies wrong for sexualizing girls to try and boost their sales?
Women are often seen as objects and less then a human, they're altered like clothing to make them seem "presentable". They are looked down upon and underappreciated, but I feel as though women should be recognized and they deserve better recognition then the media gives. Females are the strongest gender to me, I say this because females carry a human in their womb for 9 months, goes through endless pain to be able to bring a human life into the world, and doesn't complain about the amount of suffering she went through because it was for the great of another humans life. We choose to ignore that because society made birth a norm it isn't a big deal. But a man could do some of the smallest of things, and still be recognized for his "accomplishments". The media portrays women as less important then men and I feel this is because were giving social media the power to take over our brains and let it control how we view things, and how females being represented as less then men is "normal". But what really is normal? Letting others choose the way you think? Or degrading a person because of how society wants you to think of them? The way a person dresses shouldn't effect how you view them as a person. Just because a girl dresses less, or shows more skin, does't mean she should be looked down upon and be called a slut or a hoe.
What are your opinions on this? Do guys get recognized for what they do more easily then women do? Are women's physical features being used on social media to gain more views? Do women not care about the fact that they are being sexualized, since they are allowing it to happen?
Thank you for reading,

Hey Maryan,
ReplyDeleteI believe that the media does portray that the more you work on your outer look the more views and followers you get. I believe that guys get recognized as mush as girls for what they do. I believe that males and females have the same recognition because for example, when Barrack Obama became the president he got a lot of recognition for being the first African American President. But I do believe that if one day a female becomes president she will get as much recognition for her becoming the first female president.
Hey Maryan,
ReplyDeleteI believe that media which uses the female body to attract attention always has a negative impact on females in society. This leads to unrealistic body expectations, lowered self esteem, and insecurity. Yes, it is morally wrong for companies to use this method of advertising, but at the end of the day, it gets them more money with a bearable amount of backlash. I could also agree on the point of women being seen as "less" than men. This also leads to men being recognised a lot more than females for an accomplishment, since women are seen as irrelevant. I could see that females being seen as "less than male" being an argument which still somehow exists today. Is this still normal and as abundant as previous time periods though? No. A greater amount of people nowadays are fighting for their own freedom, equality, and right to their own actions. Media also contributes to the slut shaming of females as well because somewhere, the stereotype of showing skin as a female is slutty, has been created due to how advertisers have been taking advantage of sex appeal in marketing.
Hey Maryan, I agree that the media often unjustly portrays women. You talked about women being portrayed as objects and less than human and this is a very sad reality. If you go to youtube and click any music video for a rap/hip-hop song you will 90% of the time see this. There are so many people who see these including kids and I believe that it could have a strong impact on their future beliefs and the way they see women. Its a sort of a cycle, kids see women portrayed like this, they believe that's all women are and then that's passed on to somebody else. Something must really be done about this.
ReplyDeleteHey Maryan, I agree the media is making the women of the real world insecure of how they look. As for if the companies are allowed to sexualize girls to boost their sales, I believe no. There should be no way companies are able to destroy female dignity to gain money. I believe there needs to be action to be done from the government's side to ban these types of ads. As for do, guys get recognized for what they do more easily than women do I disagree. I agree with Abdullahi that if there where a female president sworn in office she would get as much fame as Barack Obama did if not even more. Also for your last question, do women not care about the fact that they are being sexualized since they are allowing it to happen I disagree again. I believe that the only reason they are allowing it is that they grew up seeing females being sexualized that they now see it as a norm.
