Stop Stereotyping Gay Men

Hello Classmates

We have all stereotyped a group of people at one point in our lives. One stereotype that still goes on in our society is that all gay people are not masculine but are more feminine. I believe that these stereotypes come from the media. Nowadays the media plays a big part in our society. Gay men on television usually appear to be someone's GBF (gay best friend). Therefore they shop, dress girly, and wear makeup. This has become a challenge for the gay guys who are more masculine and love to play sports. Media is something that young people could easily be influenced by. Individuals who struggle already with their identity look for role models who are like them so they could provide them with the inspiration to be successful and overcome adversity. However, if we do not start making a difference in the media, people’s ideology about gay men would remain the same; generation after generation would keep having these assumptions, therefore all men would have to live up to the feminine gay stereotype.

      Questions

1) What other ways can we stop people from having the feminine gay stereotype ideology?

2 )There are various forms of media, such as print and film. Is there a form that influences society more than the others? If so, which one and why?

  1. Another way or source that influences people would be their role models, so famous people who dress feminine for instance James Charles, the first ever gay model for cover girl he indirectly interpreting the gay man stereotype, and he is a big role model and influence on homosexual men. He is also famous internationally so many eyes are on him. Many people would believe just by knowing him that is how homosexual men are, wearing makeup and women’s clothes.

  2. I think one other way of stoping people from stereotyping gay men would be more gay men who know they are different to come into the light and get their voices out there for other impressionable people to hear. I believe that it depends on the person on what influences them the most, but if we generalize that to the whole society then it would have to be films, because as you mentioned GBF is a really big stereotype and it came from movies not magazines.

  3. I believe one way we can stop people from stereotyping homosexuals would be having advocates for the LGBT community and educate us on the gay community and not let the media influence our views on homosexuality. I feel like people only stereotype a group they know little or nothing about so I think one way we can stop the stereotyping is educating people about the gay community. Just like what Abdullah said, it all depends on what influences the person the most because some people might not watch films or read articles, they prefer listening to the radio or podcasts because everyone is not influenced on only films, or articles.

  4. Hey, great topic OP. I can agree that gay men are stereotyped as more feminine. This is definitely seen through television and other media outlets. With gay men only being exposed as feminine, while excluding the masculine ones, this definitely contributes to the stereotype against gay men. I would say that including more masculine gay men instead of mostly "feminine" ones would help balance out the stereotype. Print and film are both very strong outlets. Where in print, it's a little more difficult to reach someones emotions, while in film it is much easier. I believe both sources of media have the power to negatively or positively impact society, it just depends on how it is created.

  5. I believe that the best way to stop people from this ideology is to educate people that these stereotypes do not exist. I believe that shows and movies have the greatest influence on society. They portray gay men as weak and feminine. I believe there should be shows and movies in where gay men are portrayed as regular men strong men capable of doing everything straight men are capable of.
